2021 NaPoWriMo April 4. Half-lit

2021 NaPoWriMo April 4. Half-lit.

Prompt: A liminal space – odd, transitional, at the threshold of neither here nor there. Choose a photograph on Twitter from the perpetually disconcerting @SpaceLiminalBot, and let it inspire a poem.

Half-lit

Haunted by red-eyed houses,
weird windows, dead or aglow.

Who lives behind those walls? What
are windows for, anyway?

Their double meaning: look out!
Their call: let light in!

I offer nothing, merely look,
lured by the glow,

push-pulled, repulsed, all
ready, hooked.

Red light means: stop,
an invitation: ladies on display,

window-shop for hookers
in cobblestone Amsterdam.

Glow of blood-stain above door
once pleaded with Death:

Don’t stop, walk on,
harvest victims elsewhere!

Ominous lights, arcane plights,
why be intrigued?

What’s it to me?
Images, foreign lands, history.

Why foist windblown stories
on the unknown?

Let go of what was.
There’s a future to own.
