Mammalian Jealousy

Reply to my friend Connie, recounting how her cat will squat on the newspaper as soon as it’ arrived.

Ursa is jealous. That’s the reason. Animals are fiercely jealous. They want undivided attention and love. Even cows. I have a story similar to your friend’s with the typewriter.

I went to see my Swiss farmer friend while he was milking his cows. He loves them (70 or so) knows every single name. He was in a stable milking a bunch. He works mostly alone. I visited and stood at the entrance chatting with him, laughing, having fun, when all of a sudden the cow closest to the entrance took a step backwards/sideways in my direction and released herself with a big splatter. Some of it hit my shoes. I was impressed! Like we, all creatures want exclusive love and will fight for it if need be. They want reassurance.

Buddhists acknowledge them as sentient beings and include them in their meditations. Pope Francis came out with a statement affirming that animals, too, have a soul. That statement later vanished, unsurprisingly.

We human mammalians are slowly waking up. That’s great. And high time, too.

Enjoy the purring! 🐈🐱😍🐮🐂🤗
